Hate Crimes Courses for CA Agencies

This new course Tools for Tolerance® Hate Crimes for First Responders, is designed for law enforcement officers who are responsible for first response to a hate crime or hate incidents. It provides up-to-date information to assist officers in the safe and successful handling of hate and bias motivated crimes. The course will provide officers with information and skills necessary to conduct a preliminary investigation involving hate crime. This course meets the new training requirements of Penal Code

Section 13519.6. Utilizing real-life scenarios, participants will discuss the unique dynamics of hate crimes. Participants will identify common dynamics of hate crime victims and strategies for conducting an effective interview. It will include information about the origins of hate and an overview of various hate groups. The course will use case scenarios for participants to work with throughout the day. Participants will discuss investigative techniques, evidence collection, report writing and documentation, and the impact of hate crimes on the community.

This class is open to all sworn and civilian personnel.

The objectives of this program include:

• Meets new requirements of 13519.6PC
• Expand legal knowledge of hate crimes
• provide first responders with scope of hate crime dynamics
• Prepare first responders for initial investigation and documentation
• Expose officers to the importance of their role in addressing hate crimes
• Understand typology of perpetrators

Class is POST certified and covered under POST Plan IV.
