ACSA Region 16, in partnership with The Museum of Tolerance, invites all educators to explore the application of cultural proficiency beyond intention to impact.

This FREE Conference includes:

  • Keynote speaker: Dr. Jane Margolis. Dr. Margolis is an educational researcher at UCLA CS Equity Project and the School of Education and Information Studies, who in 2016 received the Obama White House Champion of Change award for broadening participation and inclusion in K-12 computer science education. Margolis is the co-author of Stuck in the Shallow End: Education, Race, and Computing (MIT, 2008, 2017) and of the new graphic novel, Power On! (MIT, 2022) that was inspired by interviews with youth. It was recently selected as one of the Favorite New Books for Young Adults in 2022 by Social Justice Books. 

  • Workshops with thought leaders such as:
    • Dr. Jeff Share: UCLA Professor & Critical Media Literacy Expert who will share a critical media literacy framework
    • Dr. Marco Nava: LAUSD Administrator, Induction & Credentialing, Human Resources, who will offer culturally proficient strategies for equitable outcomes
    • Dr. Tonikiaa Orange: Director for the Culture and Equity Project (CEP) and Assistant Director for the Principal leadership Institute (PLI) at UCLA Center X, she will expand on culturally responsive pedagogy and Reciprocal Learning Partnerships for Equity Coaching Framework.
    • Dr. Ed Eng: Currently a Councilmember of La Mirada (was Mayor in 2017 and 2022), and a seasoned executive with 25+ years of diverse industry experience in government, media, consulting, and engineering. He will speak about his best-selling book: “The Accidental Mayor: From the Side Streets of Chinatown to the Main Street of City Hall.”

  • Your choice of one guided exhibit experience such as Anne Frank Exhibit, Finding Our Families, Finding Ourselves, or The Social Lab. Includes facilitated dialogue.
