TORN LILACS: A true WWII story of love, defiance and hope
With Author Henry Michalski
IN-PERSON
Sunday, October 22nd 1:00pm
Fela met her future husband, Joska Michalski, in a small Polish town just before the German invasion and the start of the Holocaust. Their burgeoning relationship was interrupted when Fela, with her brother Kuba, fled Poland on foot to evade the Nazis. They were arrested, imprisoned, released, betrayed and separated multiple times before being deported to a remote island gulag in Siberia, and for years were slave laborers. Joska also had his own harrowing journey in Soviet slave labor camps. Fela and Joska were released from their respective Soviet imprisonment, and beyond all probability, they miraculously found each other again.
Meet their son and the author of Torn Lilacs Henry Michalski, who will tell their incredible story. Henry was born in Kazakhstan in 1945. As a toddler, he lived in a Displaced Person’s (DP) Camp in Germany until he arrived at Ellis Island with his parents in 1949. He is an award-winning educator and a freelance journalist.
A book sale and signing will follow the program.
