Screening of KimjongiliaTuesday, October 22, 2009 at 7:00pm
A screening of the documentary Kimjongilia was held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in the Peltz Theater. The film looks at North Korea's totalitarian regime under which millions of its citizens have starved to death while hundreds of thousands languish in its Gulags vast system of forced labor camps. A questions and answer session following the screening was moderated by Liebe Geft, Director of the Museum of Tolerance and included the films' director, N.C. Heikin, executive producer James Egan and very special guest Shin Dong-hyuk. Shin was born in a prison camp and raised to be a slave. He knew nothing of the outside world until a new prisoner from Pyongyang told stories about the food he used to eat. Shin began to feel the camp was unbearable and finally made a run for it, surviving the electrified fence, while his friend was electrocuted. He got to South Korea in 2006, at the age of 24. |
