"This is one of the most important field trips for what it teaches our children. The Museum of Tolerance exposes the students to ideas that will make these young people positive leaders of our community. The values taught here tie in beautifully with our discussions in English and History on civil rights and our responsibilities to protect all people's rights."

STEPS TO TOLERANCE is a program designed for 5th and 6th grade students that provides an age-appropriate introduction to museums, Holocaust history and contemporary issues of tolerance and respect. This 3- hour program takes place in the museum’s Youth Action Lab.
During this program, students:
- Receive their own Living and Learning Journal to record their observations and thoughts during the program
- Hear a Holocaust survivor’s personal testimony and have the opportunity for questions and answers
- View a documentary film for children on the Holocaust and Darfur
- Explore artifact cases containing items collected from the ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust
- Discover the meaning of propaganda and symbols by discussing and handling real Holocaust artifacts, such as a Jewish star and a Nazi armband
- Read a story about tolerance and discuss how its themes relate to the Holocaust and to contemporary issues of prejudice and bullying
During this program, students are exposed to the learning strategies of brainstorming, discussion, teamwork and fact-finding and have an interactive learning experience using literature and primary artifacts. The program reinforces observation, deduction, critical-thinking and verbal skills.
Museum content is supported by the California Reading-Language Arts and History-Social Science Frameworks and is aligned to the California Content Standards for English-Language Arts and History-Social Science, grades 3-12.
