Jacob's Cane: A Jewish Family's Journey from the four Lands of Lithuania to the Ports of London and Baltimore

An Evening with Elisa New

Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 7:30pm

When Elisa New held her great-grandfather Jacob Levy’s cane for the first time in 1997, its finely crafted design led her to see that her family’s story was not the standard coming-to-America tale that she had once assumed. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery with her daughter Yael, New traveled from the suburban parlors of Baltimore to World War II battlefields to trace previous generations. Jacob’s Cane is more than one family’s mysteries unlocked: it is a story which captures the rich texture of life in Lithuania, London and America.

Elisa New is a professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University.

A book signing followed the program.

Operation Last Chance; An Evening with Ephraim Zuroff

Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 7:00pm

Sixty years after the end of World War II, members of the Nazi party and their collaborators are still alive – and are increasingly difficult to track down. And the clock is ticking. But Efraim Zuroff will not give up.

In 2002, Zuroff launched a vast campaign called “Operation Last Chance” to find the biggest Nazi criminals, before it’s too late. Combining the thrill of a detective story with the inherent poignancy of WWII history, Operation Last Chance delivers the important and moving story of one man’s efforts to being criminals to justice.

Efraim Zuroff is Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Israel.

A book signing followed the program.
