Sylvia Mendez is a civil rights activist and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. At age eight, she played an instrumental role in Mendez vs. Westminster, the landmark case that would help to make California the first state in the nation to end segregation in its schools and help pave the way to Brown v. Board of Education which would mandate the desegregation of all the nation’s public schools.
