The Museum of Tolerance and ChildFund® International present
THE POWER TO PLAY - From Trash to Treasure.
Opening September 13, 2009
On September 13th, the Museum of Tolerance celebrated the opening of our newest special exhibition, The Power to Play: From Trash to Treasure. This exhibition features toys handcrafted by children from Africa, Asia and the Americas using recycled and other locally available materials. These toys are on loan to the MOT from ChildFund International. The exhibition was designed by Museum of Tolerance Art Director, Yasmine Molavi.
The opening program featured: Liebe Geft, Director of the Museum of Tolerance; Anne Lynam Goddard, President and CEO, ChildFund International; and Thomas Weisner, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology, Department of Psychiatry and Anthropology, UCLA and ChildFund Board Member. Special featured speaker, Shauntay Hinton, is a former Miss USA and currently hosts the Fine Living Channel’s travel and lifestyle series, We Live Here. As a young girl growing up in rural Mississippi, Shauntay was a ChildFund-sponsored child.
The program was followed by ribbon cutting and reception where in celebration of the exhibition, guests were treated to cookies shaped like toys from the exhibition.
In addition to viewing the exhibition, visitors participated in activities for our Family Sunday program and made toy cars from recycled water bottles and hangers. Museum guests also celebrated Hispanic Heritage month by making maracas and mariachi vests.
Please join us for our next Family Sunday on October 18th to see the new exhibition, join toy workshops and celebrate National Diversity Month!
89.3FM KPCC is the official media sponsor of The Power to Play: From Trash to Treasure. This exhibition is made possible with generous support from lead sponsors Ralphs Grocery Co. and Jakks Pacific, Inc. and additional support from UPS and Green Toys.
