Sunday is Juneteenth.

Juneteenth honors the day that African Americans in Texas learned that slavery had ended - June 19, 1865.

Sunday, June 19, 2011 is the 148th anniversary of Juneteenth 

 

Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, Gordon Granger, a general with the Union Army, informed slaves in the Gulf of Mexico town of Galveston, Texas that the federal government, through President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, had set them free two and a half years prior on January 1, 1863.
